Spring is coming

Spring is on the way to Maine. Of course, it felt like Silver Spring skipped it entirely yesterday. It was a blazing 80 degrees here. I’m told that in Five Islands it is foggy and damp, but the deep snow has melted. So now it’s what the Mainers call “mud season”. Sounds lovely.
Robert and I will be heading to Five Islands in a few weeks along with niece Katy and husband Mark to do some finish work on the house. We hope to tile the bathroom and perhaps install some bamboo flooring. So Bob the builder is working at a feverish pace to get the interior ready. We decided that it was necessary to gut the interior, rip out all the drywall and insulation. That turned out to be an excellent decision because underneath the drywall Bob found very poor electrical wiring apparently done by an earlier homeowner. Also, there were chipmunk or squirrels nests in the walls, yuck.
The electrician is there today, re-wiring and installing recessed lighting in the kitchen. Robert must have good lighting to slaughter his lobsters by. Stay tuned for interior pictures.
In the meantime, here are Bob’s latest shots of the completed exterior. The shingling and trim are complete and look beautiful.
Bob built us a temporary porch to get into the sliding patio door. In the future, there will be a screened in porch in this spot.
And Bob has demolished the bathroom in preparation for a complete redo. There is no longer any privacy for anyone using the toilet.
Stay tuned for more pictures as the inside comes back to life.
