Finally, in the home stretch

I haven’t been updating the blog because mostly we have been dealing with paperwork related to our mortgage on 35 Lewis Road. Pretty boring. There were a few scary moments when we feared the whole thing would fall through. But, finally, it looks like things are on track and we will be closing on Friday afternoon in Portland. My fingers are still crossed and I’m knocking on wood.
We are planning to leave here on Thursday morning at 7 a.m. and drive up to Bath. We’ll then go down to Five Islands for the walk through with the sellers on Friday morning, and then back to Portland for the closing.
We’ll stay Thursday night in a hotel in Bath and then, assuming all goes well and the heat still works, we’ll sleep at 35 Lewis Road from Friday until Tuesday when we come back home. This has led to all kinds of anxiety about where we’ll sleep and, of course, what we’ll eat. We had hoped to haul our nice queen sized guest bed up there on our trailer. But, alas, the trailer is too small. And we don’t particularly want to lose the mattress and box spring on the NJ turnpike.
So, I found a mattress company in Portland that actually makes the mattresses right there. Crazy, actual manufacturing jobs in the U.S. So, of course, I have to throw them a little business. They can deliver a mattress to 35 Lewis, but not on Friday. Oops, where will we sleep Friday night? They can deliver on Thursday, but will the sellers allow us to put a mattress in the house before closing? My guess is they won’t mind, but I’m still waiting on a call back from my agent. Vamos a ver.
We went to Ikea to shop for kitchen supplies over the weekend. Robert, romantic that he is, noted that it was just like when we were newlyweds. Right.
You know Robert has to have a fully equipped kitchen in order to work his culinary magic. So we got all the basics, dishes, pots, pans, utensils, dish towels, etc. Most importantly, we got wine glasses. There was an uproar the last two years in Five Islands when the assembled gang realized the rental house had not a single proper wine glass. Heaven forfend! So, tick those off the shopping list.
Now we have to go back to Ikea to get a couple of cheap easy chairs. We’ll be in the house for 4 nights, so we need someplace to rest our weary bones after long days of cleaning and pulling weeds. I thought I’d never have to set foot in an Ikea again, and now twice in less than a week.
Well, enough of the boring details. I’ll update you after we get there and include some shots of Five Islands in the autumn. My research says that this week the foliage is at peak along the Maine coast. So stay tuned.
